05-15-2003: "One Person, One Letter" campaign to Object SSI/SSD Benefit Cut completed

The "One Person, One Letter" campaign collaborated by Chinese Newcomers Service Center and Independence Living Resources Center. All the letters collected were delivered to Sacramento by the staff of Independence Living Resources Center today (5/15/2003). They also attended the meeting with State Officials. Some San Francisco Supervisors and representative from other Organization also attended the meeting. The result was very satisfied. Governor Gray Davis agreed to drop the Benefit cut proposal thus means the SSI/SSD Benefit will not be deducted. Chinese Newcomers Service Center and Independence Living Resources Center would like to thank you those who came to Chinese Newcomers Service Center to sign the objection letter. Without your involvement, the Benefit cut proposal might be passed by the State Legislative.

The SSI/SSP Benefit were important to the seniors and disabled citizens. Most of them depend on this benefit to support their living. However, the California State Government has a proposal of cutting $70.00 from the SSI/SSP Benefit. If this proposal becomes reality, it will create a huge impact to the daily live of the seniors and disabled. In view of this, Chinese Newcomers Service Center collaborate with Independence Living Resources Center to start a "One person, one letter" campaign to object this proposal. This campaign started from April 28, 2003 and was ended on May 12, 2003. During this period, Chinese Newcomers Service Center has collected over 2,500 objection letter signed by the SSI/SSP Benefit receivers. Independence Living Resources Center will responsible to deliver all these letters to the Assembly Member Wesley Chesbro and the Committee Members in Sacramento. We wish these letters could change the State Government's decision of cutting the SSI/SSP Benefit.
