07-30-2004: Youth Empowerment Program

The Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) comes right after the 2004 C.A.T.S Summer Computer Class for Student. This was a new program for the youth. The purpose of this program is to lead the youth to experience the life other than school, library, home. As this was the first year that CNSC host this kind of program, we picked 9 youth whose age from 12-15 to participate to the YEP. The program last for 2 weeks. The participants will stay in CNSC half day to learn and go out to visit different Organizations for another half day. The subjects they learnt including:

  • 3D origami,
  • Flyer design,
  • Use of digital camera,
  • Money management,
  • Responsibility,
  • Personal and public sanitary etc.

CNSC also arranged the youths to visit the following organization where to also learn and understand:

  • On Lok Senior Center - to help, serve, and play with the seniors.
  • Chinese Hospital - to understand the basic operations of different department in a hospital as well as to understand the importance of personal and public sanitary.
  • San Francisco Main Library
  • Library for the Blinded - to learn how the blinded read, "see" movies, typing and to use computer etc.
  • San Francisco City Hall
  • Sing Tao Daily,
  • Sing Tao Chinese Radio.

The youths also participated in a cooking show of World Channel 32 to see how a show was making. They also were being interview by World Channel 32 to talk about their feeling and what they have learnt from this program.

The last day of this program was unforgettable. CNSC arranged a very formal lunch in a Italian Restaurant and invited their parents to join. The proposed of the luncheon was to let them learn "table manner". All the youth enjoy the lunch very much and said they will teach their family members.

The Youth Empowerment Program was very successful. CNSC is planning to continue this program in next summer and to accept more youths to join.
